Ssungjung Kim (South Korea)
Ssungjung Kim's artworks are characterized by their playful symbols and vivid imagery, which often give the impression of being the sole focus of the artwork, exuding a strong presence. However, viewers are soon captivated by the myriad of independent points and their convex three-dimensionality.
Kim's points are not calculated for the effect of light, nor are they mass-produced as halftone dots; they are meticulously hand-carved. Therefore, they take on a convex shape with the recoil of the moment of printing, resembling beads, and serve as a medium that awakens the viewer's sense of touch. Ssungjung Kim's art employs a flexible composition of the canvas, filling it with repeated points to transform the whimsical symbols into a unique image through the interplay of color and material. The structural tension between the dots and spaces, the balance between form and color, creates a subtle ripple in the viewer's gaze.
