Artist Statements_
I am Seongeun Lee, a textile artist. I explore the coexistence of humans and nature in modern society, and embodies humas's inherent love for nature through the medium of 'fiber'. I want to visualize the harmonious relationship between human and nature through textiles, based on the concept that attachment to nature and the instinct to return to it are inherent in human genes and minds.
As the main material are natural fibers, I reflect upon the fundamental principles behind the creation and extraction of these materials, naturally leading me to contemplate the coexistence of humans and nature. In addition, by observing the growth of plants which are filled with the organic beauty derived from the nature, designs in Biomorphic form are obtained. I observe the growth of various plants in my studio. Rather than colorful flowers, I examine a plant’s stems or roots, which are similar to the blood vessels in humans, being directly linked to its vital power. The stem which connects all the components of a plant, has a new expressive value in describing the nature’s hold on life. The cross section and inner part of the stem were examined in detail and were expressed in three dimensions. By being connected with natural materials, the main theme of my artwork reminds us of the nature and accommodates the message of ‘returning to nature’.
For my future work, I have recently been focusing on the increasing need for a return to nature and addressing environmental issues in modern society. Consequently, I have felt the importance of researching sustainable fabrics and techniques. As a next step, I aim to enhance my artistic practice by improving the material limitations and longevity of natural fibers. I want to explore deeper into the potential expressive value of three-dimensional fiber representations and contribute my works and techniques to the field of textile art as a textile artist.
